First Year Bachelor of Teaching Early Childhood Education
Mt Albert campus

What inspired you to take this course and career path?
I’m currently working as an ECE teacher on Waiheke Island and am constantly amazed at the ways the children I work with explore and explain things in their own ways. I believe children are our future and I want to further my own education and knowledge so I can assist them with the foundations of their future learning.

Why did you decide to become a Student Rep?
I decided to become one of our class reps as no one else put their hand up and I wish to gain leadership and confidence skills through the role but was keen to let someone else fill it if they had wanted too.

What changes do you hope to achieve as a Rep this semester?
This semester I mainly want to focus on changing my own confidence levels and creating an open dialogue with my peers through my role as class Rep

If you have to bake or cook for others, what is your ‘signature dish?’
A chocolate wacky cake, or some other form of sweet baking, quite often Gluten Free

Where is your hometown and what is the best thing about it?
My hometown is Waiheke Island and I feel the best thing about it is that you are never too far away from a beach and a friendly face.

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?
I would definitely travel back to Europe and the United Kingdom as I feel the 27 days I spent travelling around in 2012 just gave me a taste of what it was like and I would love to experience and explore more of what I didn’t get to see.

What is the book or movie that has influenced you the most and why?
I grew up reading Harry Potter and loved the idea of bringing magic into our muggle world and the way it celebrates and encourages the acceptance of differences which can be highly relatable to everyone at different points of their lives.

What was your first job (or if you haven’t had a job, your first big responsibility)?
My first job was a check out operator at the local supermarket on Waiheke Island when I was 15 years old. I worked there for 3 years while moving up the ranks to be a supervisor before leaving for a few months to be a barista at a coffee bar at the wharf before going back to the supermarket for another five years in a range of roles which included checkout supervisor, performing the assistant checkout manager role and being the health and safety rep for our store.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
In five years I see myself as a fully qualified Early Childhood Teacher, working in the job that I love and fostering the minds of our future generations.
