Tracee Knowler

First Year Certificate in Animal Welfare Investigation
Unitec Mt Albert

What inspired you to take this course and career path?
Have just started work with the SPCA as a senior animal welfare inspector so the course is a ‘must do’.

Why did you decide to become a Student Rep?
I was asked to stand and then voted in so I see it as a real compliment (and a responsibility) that others have put their trust in me to represent them.

What changes do you hope to achieve as a Rep this semester?
Ours is a distance course, so we are only together for three block courses throughout the year. Our class is hugely varied in age, experience and confidence so I hope to help facilitate and encourage everyone to participate evenly within the group.

If you have to bake or cook for others, what is your ‘signature dish?’
Curry…..or my world famous fried rice smothered in Kaitaia Fire sauce!

Where is your hometown and what is the best thing about it?
My hometown is Kaitaia and the best thing is my front yard, which is literally 90 Mile beach… also Cape Reinga. If you call yourself a Kiwi, you must go at least once. I promise you will be gobsmacked at what a beautiful and spiritual place it is!

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?
London today thanks….my daughter is there on her OE and I haven’t seen her for over a year! Are you offering me a ticket??

What is the book or movie that has influenced you the most and why?
Easy – Third Culture Kids’, I was brought up as a third culture kid in an exciting and exotic country for which I am forever grateful, but it was a very rude awakening to return to NZ as a teenager. In my 30s I found this book and realised it was actually a ‘thing’ and I could make sense of the way I thought and saw things. It was my light bulb moment! It’s now permanently on my kindle and I reread it quite often.

What was your first job (or if you haven’t had a job, your first big responsibility)?
Left school to work in a shoe factory then courier, post office worker, nanny, lifeguard, big OE, 19 years in the NZ Police with 12 years as a Detective investigating serious crime, then two years working internationally responding to disasters for Red Cross and now SPCA!

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
Bahahaha….ask me in 2022!
